Together with our families, some of us created our best memories while watching at the Cinema. Because of that, Films have been a part of our lives since our childhood. Some films are good, some films are bad. Some movies are breath-taking, and some movies are life-changing. With countless titles to choose from, how can we make sure we watch the best films out there? With that said, here are 5 Movies I think everyone should watch at least once in their lifetime!
1. Shutter Island (2010)
Directed by: Martin Scorcese
Film Synopsis: The implausible escape of a brilliant murderess brings U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner (Mark Ruffalo) to Ashecliffe Hospital, a fortress-like insane asylum located on a remote, windswept island. The woman appears to have vanished from a locked room, and there are hints of terrible deeds committed within the hospital walls. As the investigation deepens, Teddy realizes he will have to confront his own dark fears if he hopes to make it off the island alive.
- This film follows story from the perspective of US. Marshall Teddy Daniels and his arrival to Ashecliffe Hospital. From the start, it is not sure where the film is going. Halfway through the movie, you think it is something and towards the end, it is another thing. There's only way to describe this roller-coaster of a movie: It's not what you think it is. This film is a mind-blowing masterpiece by Martin Scorcese with one of my favorite plot twists ever in cinema history.
2. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Directed by: Frank Darabont
Film Synopsis: Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for the murders of his wife and her lover and is sentenced to a tough prison. However, only Andy knows he didn't commit the crimes. While there, he forms a friendship with Red (Morgan Freeman), experiences brutality of prison life, adapts, helps the warden, etc., all in 19 years.
- This movie is about love, friendships, and redemption. It follows the story of Andy Dufresne who spent 19 years in prison because he was wrongly accused of murdering his wife. This movie taught me a lot about different things. It taught me about reality in prison, and the philosophies of the inmates in there, espececially Brooks. For me, it is interesting that he chooses life in prison over freedom because in prison, he actually feels useful. This film is a cinematic masterpiece with one of the most iconic scenes in film history towards the end. The Shawshank Redemption might seem a depressing film at first, but it has one of the best endings i've ever seen in a film. Definitely a must watch for everyone.
3. Fight Club (1999)
Directed by: David Fincher
Film Synopsis: A depressed man (Edward Norton) suffering from insomnia meets a strange soap salesman named Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) and soon finds himself living in his squalid house after his perfect apartment is destroyed. The two bored men form an underground club with strict rules and fight other men who are fed up with their mundane lives. Their perfect partnership frays when Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), a fellow support group crasher, attracts Tyler's attention.
- This classic film is way ahead of its time. Fight Club is another film that is one thing at the first half, and it's plot completely changes by the second half of the film.
The acting in this movie is incredible especially the iconic duo of Edward Norton and Brad Pitt. Although the movie might seem just about chaos and dark comedy at first, this film teaches Tyler Durden's unorthodox Philosophy in life that might change the life of others. Without a doubt, Fight Club has my favorite plot twist of all time. I literally had goosebumps during the twist reveal. The replay value of this film is amazing. This is one of those films where you might need to re-watch it a couple of times to completely catch all the small details and easter eggs they put in the film. Do not sleep on this masterpiece!
4. Forrest Gump (1994)
Directed by: Robert Zemeckis
- This film is heartwarming and one of a kind story about the life of Forrest Gump. This film is basically a narration of Forrest's life and the people he met along the way that taught him valuable lessons in life. I find this film this movie inspiring just because Forrest is one of those "Pure" souls with an IQ of 75, he experienced a lot of things: Serving the army, losing a friend, falling in love, being a worldwide sensation, and failing in his relationship with his childhood love. Finally, the film's ending is truly one of the most heartwarming ending I have ever seen. This movie is definitely a must watch.
5. Inception (2010)
Directed by: Christopher Nolan
- This is one of those "What the F?" Films where it will take you to a roller-coaster ride of emotions and twists. The story and the plot is unique and very-well thought. Who ever wrote the story of Inception is am absolute genius to the point where I sometimes question myself "Am I living in the reality? What if this is just a dream?" One of the most amazing things about this film is the principle that an action as simple as suggesting an "Idea" can completely change the life of someone else. I don't want to spoil the movie for you guys, but once you finish it.. It will leave you questioning reality.
